Google Pixel Watch 2: Rumoured battery life leap set to impress

May 25, 2023May 25, 2023

According to a new report, Google Pixel Watch 2 will get a battery life upgrade when it launches later this year. It will also be the first watch to run wearOS 4.

Google's original Pixel Watch was met with excitement. It definitely left a mark, albeit one that left room for improvement.

The device shines with its sleek aesthetic and seamless integration with Fitbit. It operates on the advanced WearOS 3.5, boasting an always-on AMOLED display. Additional features include e-SIM support, Google Assistant, Google Pay, and a host of other functionalities that enhance its appeal. However, there are some negatives – one of which is the dismal battery life.

Now, building upon the foundation set by its predecessor, the search giant is developing the Pixel Watch 2. If the first edition was Google dipping its toes into the smartwatch waters, the Pixel Watch 2 is the company diving headfirst.

According to 9to5google sources, the upcoming smartwatch is poised to deliver a significantly extended battery life. The Pixel Watch 2 will reportedly be able go for over a day with the always-on display enabled. With battery-saving features activated, it should be good for about two days.

This is a notable leap forward considering that the original model struggled to last a full day. And that's even with the always-on display disabled.

The secret behind this extended battery life lies in the Pixel Watch 2's heart – its new processor. The Qualcomm Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 chip, touted to be 20% more power-efficient than the previous model's Snapdragon Wear 4100+, promises a seamless user experience with reduced power consumption. The watch also boasts a larger capacity battery. This ensures users can enjoy the watch's features for longer before needing a recharge.

Perhaps we can look to the Mobvoi TicWatch 5 Pro on evidence the efficacy of this processor. That watch can go several days on a full charge.

The Pixel Watch 2 will not just be about extended battery life and efficient processing. It will also be about enhancing the user's health tracking experience.

More health sensors are likely to be embedded into the device, offering a wider range of health-related features. This follows the previous anticipation of a fully functional blood oxygen sensor and the possible addition of a temperature and EDA sensor, as previously seen in high-end Fitbit devices. Those things top our list of wished for health features. And a better set of advanced performance metrics.

Furthermore, the Pixel Watch 2 is anticipated to be the first device to run Wear OS 4, Google's next generation operating system designed for smartwatches. This new software upgrade will, no doubt, enhance the overall user experience.

While the exact launch date remains undisclosed, the Pixel Watch 2 is expected to debut in the fall of this year. This aligns with the speculation that Google will follow a similar release schedule as Apple, with one new smartwatch generation released per year.
