Mar 06, 2023Spider's nest in Honda frame the likely source or error code
My 2007 Honda Accord four-cylinder model has an error code P2422 which, when I run an online search, says that my car has a "vent shut valve close malfunction." What is my next step? – Mohammed
This code refers to a problem within the EVAP canister and its venting system. Specifically, the system is not venting or is blocked. The evaporative emission system (EVAP) on your vehicle stores gas tank vapour and re-routes it back to the engine.
Honda has a technical service bulletin dealing with a common blockage from a yellow sac spider. Yes you read correctly, a spider's nest residing in the frame of the car where the vent hose terminates. I have yet to personally find a yellow sac spider's nest, however, I have replaced a few canister vent solenoids to clear up this problem. The vent solenoid is the electrical component that opens and closes allowing air to escape the storage canister.
Have your mechanic follow the procedure within the bulletin and look for the spider's nest first. If that nets a negative result, have them follow standard diagnostic procedures for the EVAP system, paying particular attention to the vent solenoid.
These procedures require the use of an advanced scan tool, enabling the technician to command various solenoids to open and close while monitoring fuel tank pressure and using a "smoke machine." Make sure the shop you choose has the necessary tools to complete this diagnosis.
