Spare your engine, replace the oil filter

The car oil filter is the part charged with keeping the engine oil clean. The filter blocks dust and other unwanted particles from getting to the engine.

The oil also lubricates the many metallic moving parts of the vehicle. For that reason, with time, the filter becomes defective by getting clogged and, therefore, calls for replacement.

Dan Kwikiriza, a mechanic in Kisaasi says a change of the oil filter should be done each time you change the oil.

The usage of the car, its age and the manufacturer's requirements will determine and inform how often the oil filter should be changed.

Joel Katongole, a mechanic also states that the quality of oil, dust on our roads and the fact that most of the cars here are second-hand; which means that they come with old engines, call for replacement of the filter when the oil is being changed.

He notes that there are oil types of good quality that can do up to 10,000km, which means that the oil filter can last that long.

However, he adds that there are those that can only do between 1,000km – 3,000km depending on the life of the engine and how often servicing is done.

Secondly, the oil filter also manages the flow of oil and its pressure.

An oil filter once clogged, cuts down on oil flow and the pressure is compromised, reducing its effectiveness, and therefore exposing the engine to damage.

Katongole adds that replacing the oil filter needs a professional to ensure it is properly fixed.
